Gary A Nilsen is a writer and blogger whose work reflects a rare mix of life experience, discipline, and curiosity. While his professional career in finance spans nearly five decades, his creative path has been shaped by a deep interest in history, storytelling, and the tension that lives between fact and imagination.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York and Long Island, Gary was exposed to storytelling through movies and being read to by his mother. On a summer afternoon, at the age of 14, he struck on the idea of how fun it would be to write a story. Having binged on a diet of Agatha Christie novels, Alfred Hitchcock short stories, and Gothic romances by Victoria Holt, he felt destined to add his own prose to the mix. In college he digested scores of books by Alistair MacLean and Robert Ludlum further developing a thirst for tales of adventure. His strong desire for his own exploration culminated in his working in Saudi Arabia for several years and later to his involvement in underwater archaeology. Five years of nightly reading in Arabia of such authors as Stephen King, Clive Cussler, Ken Follett, and Tom Clancy was enough to finally set him on the path to putting words on paper. In addition to his writing, he has lectured on underwater archaeology and taught creative writing, bringing together real-world knowledge and a storyteller’s instinct for atmosphere, detail, and suspense.
Gary earned his MFA in Fiction from Southern New Hampshire University. He currently lives in Arizona with his love, Nancy, and continues to write stories grounded in discovery, depth, and the pull of the unknown.
